With an average of 310 days of sunshine a year, more than 35,000 acres within four nationally designated Wilderness Areas, and the state’s highest mountains, Lake County, Colorado, features abundant opportunities for year-round, high-country fun. Pleasant summer temperatures and pure mountain air make Leadville and Twin Lakes popular summertime destinations for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. From hiking to top of the
state's two highest Fourteeners, mountain biking and high-elevation training and competitions, to horseback riding, camping, fishing, four-wheeling or enjoying the wildlife and wildflowers on a leisurely hike, there’s an activity to suit just about anyone. You'll find plenty to do in town as well, with two National Historic Districts, historical walking and driving tours, museums, shops, and great places to eat and stay. The Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad takes you on a scenic journey through the Arkansas River Valley. Mt Massive Golf is a friendly, affordable course surrounded by forests and ranchland. Stop by and visit the new Leadville Lake County Community Park and Sports Complex, complete with a playground for the kids and the world's highest synthetic turf field.Cold-weather Recreation
Lake County’s abundant snow provides for a vast number of popular winter activities, including snowshoeing, alpine and telemark skiing and riding, Nordic and cross country skiing, sledding, ice skating, snowmobiling, and dog sledding. Ski Cooper is one of the best values around, with $46 lift tickets and a "Never Ever Ski Package" for beginners that includes a lesson, equipment rental and an EZ Street Magic Carpet® ticket for just $55. There are many special events as well, including the Leadville Loppet Race, Winter Carnival, snowshoe races, ice fishing competitions and the Winter Mountain Bike Series. Regardless of the weather, there's always something fun to do in Leadville and Twin Lakes. You can enjoy all four seasons on the Mineral Belt Trail, which is perfect for hiking and biking in the warmer months and is groomed for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter.
