LEADVILLE: YEAR-ROUND RECREATION 


Turquoise LakeWith an average of 310 days of sunshine a year, more than 35,000 acres within four nationally designated Wilderness Areas, and the state’s highest mountains, Lake County, Colorado, features abundant opportunities for year-round, high-country fun. Trail information and maps for both winter and summer recreation are available at the U.S. Forest Service and the Visitor’s Centers in Leadville and Twin Lakes. In addition, the Lake County Recreation Department has programs and events throughout the year.

Warm-weather Recreation


Pleasant summer temperatures and pure mountain air make Leadville and Twin Lakes popular summertime destinations for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. From hiking to top of the horseback ridestate's two highest Fourteeners, mountain biking and competing in marathons to horseback riding, four-wheeling or enjoying the wildlife and wildflowers on a leisurely hike, there’s an activity to suit just about anyone. You'll find plenty to do in town as well, with two National Historic Districts, historical walking and driving tours, museums, shops, and great places to eat and stay. The Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad takes you on a scenic journey through the Arkansas River Valley. Mt Massive Golf is a friendly, affordable course surrounded by forests and ranchland. Stop by and visit the new Leadville Lake County Community Park and Sports Complex, complete with a playground for the kids and the world's highest synthetic turf field.
 

Cold-weather Recreation


Skier with snowballLake County’s abundant snow provides for a vast number of popular winter activities, including snowshoeing, alpine and telemark skiing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, snowboarding and dog sledding. Ski Cooper is one of the best values around, with $42 lift tickets and a "Never Ever Ski Package" for beginners that includes a lesson, equipment rental and lift ticket for just $60. There are many special events as well, including the Leadville Loppet Race, Winter Carnival, snowshoe races, turkey shoots, ice fishing competitions and Ski 100 Nordic Ski Race. Don't miss the annual Ski Joring competition, which takes place the first weekend in March!
