Greetings!
A big thank you goes out to everyone who visited, volunteered and participated in
the big events around town this month. From Boom Days and the Rocky Mountain Bike Festival to the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race and Leadville Trail 100-Mile Run, it's been a fun and busy three weeks!
Now's the time to enjoy the last days of our beautiful summer weather and to make
plans for a leaf-peeping fall foliage trip. Whether you prefer to enjoy the views on foot
or on a bike, by jeep or in a car, on horseback or by train...you'll find some of
the state's most breathtaking scenery right here in Lake County.
Be sure to drop by the Leadville Lake County Visitor Center at 809 Harrison Avenue
for free maps and information. You can also follow us on Facebook, Twitter
and the blog for deals, events, and contests.

Historical Spotlight: Camp Hale
Camp Hale, located near Leadville on U.S. Highway 24, was developed as the training
site for winter and mountain warfare during World War II. The 10th Mountain Division,
along with the38th Regimental Combat Team, 99th Infantry Battalion, and soldiers
from Fort Carson trained here at various times from 1942 to 1965.
Camp Hale placed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 10, 1992. There are
interpretive signs at the site of Camp Hale and at the entrance to Ski Cooper, where
there are also monuments for the 10th Mountain Division and the soldiers of the
99th Battalion, Norwegian nationals who liberated Norway in May 1945. U.S. Highway
24, from Leadville to Minturn, has been designated as The Tenth Mountain Division
Memorial Highway and is on the Top of the Rockies Scenic and Historic Byway.
Visit Leadville and Twin Lakes to learn about and explore Colorado history.
